Whale-Fishery

March 1891 - Hull Smack 'Emerald' was fishing in the North Sea, about 200 miles from Spurn Point, when she was run into by the smack 'Dr. Livingstone'. As 'Emerald' began sinking the crew jumped overboard, 3 men were rescued by the 'Dr. Livingstone', the skipper Henry Hewitt Page picked up by the smack 'Ernest William', one of the crew drowned. The rescued crew were taken to London on the steam cutter 'Onward'.
December 1895 - The 'Amy' was off the Dutch coast when the gale swooped down upon her. Whilst hove to, she suffered severe damage. The smack 'Tartar' of Hull offered assistance and later she became damaged. Eventually the Yarmouth smack 'Pomona' arrived and sent a boat to rescue the crew of five and returned to Yarmouth.
August 1907 - About daybreak yesterday morning the Hull Steamer 'Dynamo', Captain Clifford, on route to Antwerp collided with the Hull Steam Trawler' Quail', which was anchored in the River Humber near Killingholme due to bad weather. The skipper W. Lewis, of the 'Quail' was killed in his berth by the 'Dynamo' stem, and J. Nocoline, third hand was drowned. The 'Quail' sank in a few minutes, but the remaining members of the crew were rescued. October 1907 - Judgment in the Board of Trade inquiry at Hull into the sinking of the steam trawler 'Quail' by the Wilson Liner 'Dynamo' was given. The court found that the 'Quail' did not take up a safe and proper anchorage, and that there was no neccessity for the skipper of the 'Quail' to bring the trawler to an anchorage at all. A good and proper lookout was kept on the 'Quail', but not on the 'Dynamo'. The 'Quail' was salvaged from a depth of 70 ft. 'Quail' Iron Screw Trawler built North Shields 1897 registered Hull 1899, official No. 108531, 106 x 21 x 11 ft, 42 tons, 41 h.p. 1900 owned by Kelsall Brothers & Beeching Ltd. Manchester. 1908 lengthened by 10 ft at Goole and re-registered at Hull. 'Dynamo' Steel Screw Steamer Built and registered Hull 1884, official No. 88169, 176 x 25 x 14 ft, 306 tons, 110 h.p. 1890 for Arthur Wilson, Hull. 1910 for Wilsons & North Eastern Railway Shipping Co. Ltd. Hull. July 1914 - The Hull steam Trawler 'Quail' ran ashore at Flamborough and refloated with the help of two fishing cobles.
The crew of smacks of the 1880's consists of the captain or skipper, second hand, third hand, deck hand and cook. The last three are paid weekly wages, the cook receives 10s a week and his food, the deck hand 14s and the third hand £1 a week. The skipper and second hand are paid by a share in the proceeds of the trip, and have also to find themselves in in rations or contribute for their share. The smack being provisioned for the trip, the bills of the butcher, grocer etc. are collected on the return, and the total amount divided by five. of this the skipper and the second hand pay one fifth each and the owner the remainder on behalf of the other hands. In a prolonged voyage, when provisions run short, the supplies are brought by the cutters plying between the fleet and Hull.

March 1866 A few days since, intelligence was received here, that John Stevens had died suddenly on board the 'Burton Constable' a new smack, which deceased and others were taking to Hull, in Yorkshire. They sailed from this port on the 8th inst. and Stevens death occured off Yarmouth. He was a married man without family and was employed by Messrs. Hoad Brothers, ship-builders, as a rigger.
