December 1849 - The vast Iron Pontoon Landing Stage intended for New Holland Pier, was launched in the Ouse at Goole. It is the largest vessel ever launched, an immense concourse of people were collected together from Hull, Manchester, Doncaster, Leeds, and Sheffield to witness the leviathans plunge into its future element. Messrs E.H. Wilson & Co. built the pontoon which measured 400 x 50 x 8 ft.
Entry from Kelly's Trade Directory for 1855 - 'New Holland, a railway station and steam ferry in the parish of Barrow-on–Humber, and on the shores of the Humber, opposite Hull, 171 miles from London, 16 ½ miles from Great Grimsby, 4 east of Barton-on Humber, in North Yarborough wapentake, Glanford Brigg Union, Lindsey, North Lincolnshire. There is a good National school-room, which is licensed by the Bishop, and in which divine service is performed once every Sunday by the Vicar of Barrow. The Wesleyans have a chapel. The passage to Hull is 3 miles, and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company have established a steam ferry. Population on 1851, 401.'
"'New Holland, where a large Inn was built on the Humber bank in 1830, the turnpike intended to it, and every necessary accommodation provided for the establishment of a ferry from Hull, in connexion with the London and other mail coaches, etc. but it is the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway which has caused the erection of the village of New Holland; as it is the terminus whence passengers cross the river to Hull by steam ferry boat to which there is easy access by means of a long pier and landing stage. A steam packet was first was first used on New Holland Ferry in 1832.' – White’s Directory 1872.
Mr Ralph Peacock of New Holland, has taken out a patent consisting of a double furnace door, the chamber or space between the inner and outer surfaces being five to six inches in width. The inner plate is perforated very full of small holes and in the outer plate a revolving ventilator is inserted, which is the principle of that invented by Dr. Hale to supply close places with fresh air. The apparatus is in use on board the 'Helen MacGregor', one of Messrs Gee & Co's large sea going steam ships, and has given very general satisfaction by the report of the chief engineer, Mr McAlpine, a saving of fuel is effected and the steam better sustained. Another great advantage, as reported by the master Captain Knowles, derived from this invention is that on running before the wind they are never now annoyed and endangered by a dense cloud of smoke in the direction of the ships course. Other steamers using this include 'Yarborough', 'Grimshaw'. 'Albert' and several other river boats.
